It was a great show! I enjoyed judging "out of region" as your area has many genera that are too cool growing to be seen down south!
ReplyDeleteIt was good to see you too. When I was head a student at the Pac Central there'd be 60-70 plants pulled for award consideration and 12-15 of those would get awarded. This year fewer were pulled, but what was pulled must have been choice because we still gave out 15-16(?) awards. I was happy about the number of CCEs.
ReplyDeleteNice to see the SanFran awards posted so quickly. That was sort of the discussion I was trying to start by posting the photos of the two Paph. Vintage Venus. We have this inherant shortcoming in the judging system that awards are not available until weeks, or even months after the award was given. "Provisional until published in the AQ+". With as many centers as Florida and California each have, awards to the same hybrid can be given at different centers by different judges, or the same judges, within weeks of each other and without the judges having the benefit of referencing the earlier award. This can result in skewed scores. I have seen this happen at least a half dozen times here. In an ideal world, every center would have WiFi and online resources such as this blog could maybe provide a way for teams to at least access recent awards quickly, even if they are still provisional at the time. Of course, it would take a lot of dedicated people such as you Kathy to get the job done! I have been posting recent awards usually within a week or so at my website for the past year and a half. They do not have the descriptions though.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the pages. They couldn't happen without the complete support of the Center Chairs, the students and photographers.
ReplyDeleteWhat with the advent of 3G phones the day when we can sit at a judging table and have instant access to every center's awards is getting closer. We once accessed Jay Pfahl's Orchid Species page using a student's iPhone. *G*! It was slow as molasses in January, but it worked!
I also think its important to have some sort of 'corporate memory' of what's been awarded at the center. Like we've had 3 Paph Julius's awarded at the CSNJC. We just upgraded a previous award. Was kinda cool to go back after the fact and compare/contrast.
